A rash of sex scandals involving holy men has many in “new India” questioning an ancient tradition.

Swamis, or Hindu holy men, are getting a bad reputation in India. Several scandals have broken recently involving Hindu holy men and gurus who have committed sex crimes. In this picture, Naga Sadhus, another name for Hindu holy men, queue to have a dip in the waters of the Ganges river during the “Kumbh Mela” or the Pitcher Festival, in the northern Indian town of Haridwar, Feb. 12, 2010. BANGALORE, India — The Roman Catholic Church isn’t alone when it comes to scandal lately.

As the debate rages in the West about the ungodly behavior of godly men, a series of sex scandals involving India’s assortment of god men — called sadhu, baba or swami — is making skeptics out of many Indians.

“Most god men are self-proclaimed, and they are being increasingly outed as hypocrites and fakes,” said Ravi Ghatge, a retired banker in Bangalore. “Then everybody finds out that there is not an iota of spirituality in any of them,” he added.

India has long held a thrall in the Western mind as a land of wandering fakirs and saffron-robed holy men with matted hair. In this birthplace of several leading religions like Hinduism and Buddhism, magic and mysticism still rule.

But rapid urbanization is making the holy men of the old all but disappear from the landscapes of cities and towns.

In their place, a new breed of modern charismatic god men are holding sway, some of them saffron-robed, some of them bejeweled and others sporting wild hair-dos.

Many of them command cult following, run huge ashrams on large expanses of land, own luxury cars, television channels and lavish homes. They flourish as their supporters make large donations in cash and kind. The god men jet set around the country and the world serving their flock of devotees.

But here’s the problem. The god men aren’t, exactly, godly.

In recent weeks, in New Delhi a holy man called Swami Bhimanand Ji Maharaj Chitrakootwale was exposed for running a huge call girl racket with over a 1,000 girls that serviced, among others, politicians and influential people.

In Bangalore, Swami Nithyananda — whose ashram had several branches in the United States and all over the world — was caught on camera having sex with an actor. Even as his shell-shocked devotees called for action, Nithyananda first said he was being framed by a digitally altered video. When a second tape with yet another actor surfaced, he admitted to the incident and fled the ashram with police hot on his tail.

Other swamis have been charged with cheating, rape and child sexual abuse. The wave of scandals involving holy men had one leading newspaper headlining, “baba black sheep, have you any scruples?”

Now middle class India’s mindset is dramatically turning against India’s godmen, says Sanal Edamaruku, president of the Indian Rationalists Association. “The so-called god men don’t want to wear saffron robes anymore because they fear they will be attacked on the streets,” said Edamaruku who has long campaigned against swamis and babas.

His network of over 200 branches Indiawide has exposed many a fraudster swami and fake sadhu. “They are nothing but common thieves and scamsters who exploit the vulnerabilities of the poor and the illiterate,” said Edamaruku. He says he has more viewers for his rationalist exposes on television than all the viewers of India’s 32 religious television channels put together.

On the other side, however, are devotees such as Jayeshwari (who wanted to be identified by a single appellation, her spiritual name), who says she continues to be a staunch follower of Nithyananda.
Jayeshwari, a Bangalore-based entrepreneur, says she saw no conflict in her guru’s preachings and his personal sexual life. “He talked about transforming society, he never promised to make it an asexual society,” she said.

She and other supporters are now rallying around the beleaguered Nithyananda on a Facebook support group.

But the majority of educated India is irate over the recent incidents. Sharmila Abdulpurkar, a businesswoman in Bangalore, says the scandals have left her angry and upset. “I am a skeptic myself but what about thousands of people who had unshakable faith in these god men, who depended on them to sort out their life’s problems?” she asked.

But educated, urban Indians are often doubters when it comes to such matters. The recent spate of incidents has only made them more cynical, says Edamaruku of the rationalists association. “This swami thing is not for new India.”

Soon we will write article suggesting tools or top spy gudgets that people can use to expose fake saints, astrologers or numerologists.

Even Snakes not helping Swami Nityananda, forget his fans

March 10, 2010 in Fraud, Headline

share

Earlier Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, CM B S Yeddyurappa and State Excise Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu were among those who visited Swami Nityananda’s ashram regularly but no more.

All of these fans vanished but except one and happens to be SNAKE who finally led authorities into finding hidden illegal sandalwood in so called Swami ashram

All these fans vanished when TV channel based in the south played video footage that allegedly features Swami Nityananda in bed with Tamil actress Ranjitha.
Immediately after a news channel exposed Nityananda’s alleged romp with Tamil actress Ranjitha, a team of forest officials raided his Bidadi ashram and seized around 60 kg of sandalwood pellets.

Even the likes of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi, Karnataka CM B S Yeddyurappa, state excise minister Katta Subramanya Naidu along with several MLAs from states neighbouring Karnataka, who once frequented the ashram keeping away from the swami and his ashram to avoid controversy.

“Narendra Modi was seen here more than once and so was Excise Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu and Chief Minister B S B S Yeddyurappa,” said a source. He added that Swami Nityananda was closely associated with several prominent seers, including Bal Gangadhar Swami.

However, it is not only politicians who were attracted in the past. “Celebrities like Sudeep, Tara, Bharati Vishnuvardhan and Ambarish are his devotees,” the source said. “Tara had been to the ashram earlier. Even Bharathi Vishnuvardhan and Ambarish were regulars.
But after incident, most of these denying there association with ashram or swami.

A source also reveled that Some of the swami’s devotees used to flew in from the UK, US and Bulgaria but will they come or let themselves duped is a big question?

Last unwanted visitor was a snake who led authorities seize Around 20 kg of sandalwood when forest department sleuths conducted a raid at the ashram,” said Karthik, a wildlife volunteer, who was present during the raid.

Ashramites are understandably in denial mode. “There’s a huge conspiracy, supported by forged graphics, to malign the swami,” said Nithya Sachidananda Swamy, spokesperson, Nithyananda Dyana Peetam who still thinks that India or people have no brains and Indian love towards swami’s will get them back into business.

He added that the ashram is thankful to the devotees and disciples of Swami Nityananda who are standing by him during these testing times but only problem is, so called Swami is no where willing to stand or support his own followers and is in hiding.. May be swami needs new avatar..

Herpetologist, who had visited the ashram to rescue a snake, tipped off cops about illegal sandalwood pellets in Nityananda’s ashram

Interestingly, the cops had received the tip-off from Sharath Babu, a herpetologist, who works as honorary warden with the forest department. Just days before the sex-tape was made public, Babu had visited the ashram to rescue a snake. That’s when he sensed something awry and informed the cops.

A snake that had strayed into the ashram of self-proclaimed godman Swami Nityananda eventually led to his downfall is another theory, circulating and few still thinking what else they will find in Ashram, after finding sex tapes, Tamil actress, sandalwood and animal skins?

Unholy deeds: Forest officials suspect that it was Nityananda’s men who set the ashram on fire to destroy banned forest and animal products stocked there.

“Investigations are on to ascertain the source of these pellets. Meanwhile, we have learnt that Nityananda even used animal skin,” said an official requesting anonymity. The official added that similar raid is being conducted at the Tamil Nadu ashram of Nityananda.

Also, forest officials suspect that it’s could be Nityananda’s men who had set the ashram on fire.

“They might have stored some illegal goods in the house and would have set fire in the building to destroy the evidence. We have detained three people from the ashram for questioning. Also, we have filed a case against the ashram management and have booked them under Section 86 of the Karnataka Forest Act,” the official said. Meanwhile, a massive hunt has been launched to track Nityananda who went underground after the sex-tape became public. There are rumours that he’s in Mysore, while some say that he has gone to attend Kumbh Mela.

Well, seems like nothing going right for Run Away Swami and last word came from Dr V S Acharya, home minister of Karnataka, who finally announced yesterday that the land on which the ashram stands is of the government and was meant for cattle grazing farm. He said, he finally asked the deputy commissioner to conduct an inquiry into the matter.

When contacted, Chief Wildlife Warden B K Singh refused to comment on this issue.
